Life-Altering Moments

One of the Blogtember Topics was to write about a moment where you took a turn; a moment that was life-altering.

Life-altering moments….When I started writing this post, I started thinking long and hard about moments that were truly life-changing. There was that time my boyfriend of 7 years broke up with me and my whole life was turned upside down. (Oh hey, can you hand me that Prozac.) There was that time I moved to Atlanta and didn't know a single soul. (Does anyone want to hear about how I watched 37 episodes of Friends in one Saturday?

And then there was that moment on a little hot fall day in September of 2003…. I was about a month into my freshman year of college and I’d recently met what would become one of my lifelong best friends, Kayla (who you've met here on the blog before) and her roommate Sarah. We were new acquaintances and on this particular day all our schedules seemed to align as class-free and homework-can-wait-til-later-available.

...There is definitely a well-known and often valid stereotype associated with homeschooled kids. For the most part, I think Shannon and I side-stepped a lot of those unfortunate judgments ..either that or we really are weird and just don't know it. :) I do often find myself making the disclaimer that we never made our own soap or detergent and we only wore denim jumpers one summer…just one summer people!

Going to a big college didn't make me nervous at all; I was so excited. I’d been in college classes my last two years of high school and I love big busy environments. Besides an unfortunate run-in with a hall mate who gave me the saddest expression upon hearing I was homeschooled, my educational status had flown under the radar and I was just as “cool” as any other Seaton Hall or Bayside High kid there.

Anyway, back to that hot September day…..Excited to bond with new friends we decided to use our free afternoon and check out the pool at the fitness center. We packed up our pool bags and met in the hallway, made the walk across campus and arrived at what could no less be described as a mini spring break. Girls with legs for miles and the tiniest bikinis lounged on the side of the pool while boys with 37 rows of abs chatted them up. Groups of friends sipped from mysteriously clouded water bottles and volleyball games were in full blown effect.

We made our way into the middle of the chaos to find what appeared to be the last three remaining chairs. We all shimmied out of our USC t-shirts and soffee shorts. I turned to see Sarah and Kayla in their cute little matching two pieces and then as I took a slow-motion panoramic view around the pool at every.single.girl in their skimpy pool attire, I realized, I stood alone.

All alone in my bright orange and white hibiscus print tankini.

At that very moment, I might as well have had my denim jumper on and a sign around my neck that said “HOMESCHOOLED.” In all reality, probably no one even noticed (ok, let’s be real, this was college – I was SO judged that day). I might as well of had a roll of toilet paper trailing out of my tankini bottoms. I felt so awkward and uncomfortable and out of place and silently prayed the whole time that my new cool friends would not abandon me. It might have been the only time in my life where I hated being at a pool. An hour later when Kayla decided to put her cover up on because she was getting too much sun I breathed a sigh of relief and followed suit.
Proof she kept me around as a friend for a few more semesters

And that was the day I traded in my tankini in for a bikini. I’m telling you…life.altering.moment

Run With Me Disclaimer: Paragraph that addresses the fabulousness of modesty, being a confident woman, the benefits of homeschooling and how I actually have no problem with one pieces, was deleted. Clearly this post was meant to be humorous, so find your funny bone and try not to read into it or take it too seriously.

XO, A

Dang, who's the trashy blogger!?! Funny how you never mentioned he cheated on you in this post...hmmm I wonder how "Stern" knew.

Kayla said...

Ha! I wouldn't be caught dead in a bikini now after two kids! And for the record, you are WAY cooler than me!

And, I was thinking the same thing about who "Stern" is...

Who?!

@Stern If you think Ashley is pathetic, lacks social skills and is basically a loser than why are you going out of your way to stalk her and comment on her blog? Two things I've noticed about your little tirades...
1. You're a coward that hides behind a fake blog ID. If you have a problem with Ashley then email her privately.
2. You know an awful lot about the situation concerning Ashley's ex considering she's never gone into detail on her blog.
Unless, you played some part in what happened in Ashley's past, I have no idea why you feel the need to blast her.
Maybe, in your spare time instead of bullying Ashley you could learn proper English and learn to proofread. Just a suggestion...

Well, I have to say I think "Stern" is having problems with several things. Primarily, someone hasn't learned how to use the internet even though she appears to spend a great deal of time stalking this blog. Sweetheart, if your comment doesn't show immediately, you don't need to resubmit 11 times. I mean honestly.
Secondly, "Stern" seems to have ENTIRELY missed the point of this post. It has almost nothing to do with her ex, her romantic life, or her current relationship status. It is about growing up and self-discovery. Having the courage to take a step out of your comfort zone in an effort to become who you are meant to be. And Ashley shares all this. PUBLICLY. As herself. She doesn't use some BS anonymous comment forum or hide her face and name. She is honest and unabashedly open. Something Stern is obviously to coward to do.

And PS - "Stern," whatever your beef with Ashley is, I think it may be time for you to just move on. Sadly, your comments gave the exact opposite impression you seemed to have been going for. YOU ARE THE ONE OBSESSING. Coming on a blog anonymously and trashing someone in a comment thread. Come on.

And If Ashley doesn't get over a seven-year relationship in an amount of time that is acceptable to you, no one really cares. At our age, seven years is a quarter of our lives. It's big. And breakups are painful. And it doesn't belong to you, it belongs to Ashley. So, why don't you take all the new free time you'll have when you stop blog-stalking to take an introductory course on How To Use The Internet. For Dummies!

Loved the post, btw ;)

Hi, I'm Moly Stern. I am 18 years old and I am NOT fake.

If you want to make sure of it just take your time and find me on Facebook.

I was reading an article from a friend of yours and I accidentally found yours and I thought it was

interesting. However, when I read about "Rainbow and butterflies" saw too many suffering for no reason like you

mentioned "He left me for no reason". As a woman, I concluded myself that your boyfriend cheated on you or something.

Your blog is public and it is meant to have many comments, good or not.I don't even know about you, but through your postings I could learn that you are or seem to be mentally crazy.

You guys are just a bunch of old single woman suffering for not having no one in your lives.

I am young, pretty and I am in love!!!Ps: I lost any interesting I had in reading your blog

One for Ps: Still loving someone that is not in your life 7 years ago?Can I give you an advice? Go TRY to find someone else before it is too late, aunt Ashley !

Wow, for someone who "lost interesting" in your blog "Stern" can't seem to stop stalking you. Funny how a person who stumbled upon your blog has the time to go through all your posts/pictures and make generalizations about events she knows nothing about.

I think it's hilarious that when you called her out on her crap the only thing she could do was resort to name calling. I guess that's what you can expect from a cowardly child that has nothing better to do then stalk blogs and criticize people she doesn't know.

Oh well, I guess you can't expect much from what I can only assume is an uneducated child who has a very limited vocabulary.

Like many people have pointed out to her, she missed the entire purpose of this post but at this point there's no point arguing with someone like her. Unfortunately, the only thing she accomplished is showing your 900+ followers what an idiot "Stern" is.

@stern as you mentioned, this is my blog. So do not ever threaten me. And you are no longer welcome here so do not comment anymore or you will be blocked

WHAT THE?! I'm running a few days late on life at the moment so I'm late to the post, anyway, I read it, saw the disclaimer at the end, got a little confused, then saw all of the hullabaloo in the comments... good grief! Ashley - just keep on keeping on. Love and kisses from The LPV.

Oh my goodness. I am dying. I of course couldn't read the previous comments she made and deleted, but from the ones left here, she did nothing but make herself sound like a total idiot. Before I read all these, I was dying laughing at your post. Especially the hibiscus part. (I seriously just laughed out loud again as I wrote that) It was only a matter of time before an 18 year old "young, pretty, and in love" girl was so threated by your classy, beautiful, successful self that she had to try and publicly bash you in your comment thread. Rock on Ashley! I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog and obviously tons of others do too!!
