Throw Back Thursday...A Bang Story

I've been craving new hair lately....but, as many of you know am not a risk-taker. I'm super attached to the length of my hair....I've taken more pre-natal vitamins than Nadya Suleman trying to get it to grow out and basically threaten my hair stylist every time I go to see one if she tries cutting more than 1 centimeter off...the cut I lovingly refer to as the "microtrim." Gosh, I love the microtrim.

I've been strangely drawn to bangs. Which is odd for me since I basically have a hate/hate relationship with them. I had bangs for the first 16 years of my life. Well, I was bald until I was 2 but after that I had bangs....Big-glorious-part-starts-in-the-middle-of-your-head-80s-bangs.

So in honor of Throw Back Thursday....I thought I would take you through the history of my bangs:
I look like a baby that's been in a lot of fights and won them all #scrappy

Oh yeah.....we know what brings the boys to the yard

I get taller...the teeth keep disappearing but the bangs stay the same (unfortunately so did the chest size)

and then there was that time my bangs looked like Jim  Carey's teeth in Dumb & Dumber (I'm sorry to take you down with me Shannon but....these pics were necessary)

the hair gods clearly loved my mom...she had the best 80s hair in the all the land

Then the day came when I went in to the  hair salon requesting the "Mary Kate Olson" cut and came out with this....
Can you blame me for this being my last major hair cut I've ever had? Never request the Mary Kate Olson cut.

From this beauty I transitioned into the "wispy" bang trend
Anyone recognize this little blogging nugget? And don't be fooled....besides being see-through, I did sparkle in the sun

This trend lasted many years and the hairstyle I sported on my very first date ever....where my boyfriend took me to a football game where it rained  misted just enough to make my wispy bangs fall flat. And I sat in the passenger side trying to unnoticeably recurl my bangs by the blow of the air conditioner around my fingers on the way to the Applebees. #stuckwithoutmyrolllybrush

and then the magical day came that I got rid of my bangs...

...and traded them in for horrible grown out roots.
NEVER get highlights when you're on a college budget!

So while I don't have fond memories of bangs...I have completely unrealistic expectations that 2013 bangs will be totally different and totally awesome. And where do I get these unrealistic expectations?

Darn you Taylor Swift. Darn you.

SO....whose had bangs? And whose mother loved them enough to not give them half a head of bangs when they were little?

XO, A

Oh. My. Gosh. You were the cutest kid ever! I had some pretty unfortunate cuts as a kid. One time my aunt took me and it was like a sideways mullet. It was short and cut around my ear on the back and one side and the other side was a bob. What a nightmare. When I get home, I'll see if I can find a picture

i went through those same phases, but got rid of mine after 6th grade... had a really bad relapse where i though it would be a good idea to cut mine (or have my friend do it... even better). have thought about it a few times lately, but i KNOW i'd regret it. I think you could pull it off though

sydney at the daybook blogged about clip on bangs and hers looked really realistic.
however, i think you would look great with them because your hair is so thick.
YOUR MOM'S HAIR IS THE BIGGEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY NATURAL BORN LIFE. And I mean that as a compliment. WHAT did she use on that mane?
Annnnd, who the heeeeeeell started the whole part-halfway-to-the-back-of-your-head thing? It was absolutely atrocious, and I'll never understand why they did that to us, regardless of the time period. Omygyahhhhhh.

We are the same person!!! My bangs were just like that. They started so far on top of my head it was ridiculous and they were SO thick it's ridiculous. I hate them and hated growing them out even more. Clipping them to the side and butterfly clipping them back.

Hell.

But now I want them again. And the thought of the growing out stage I once experience keeps me from taking the plunge.

Haha that was a fun little slideshow of your hair history :)

Well thank goodness I wasn't the only poor soul who got suckered into the Olsen twins haircut. I'm still recovering from that. And the wispy bangs? Oh the memories!

Haha, you looked adorable with bangs. I can't even come close to pulling them off!

Damn it Taylor Swift!

um ADORABLE kid. seriously!! And I love all these flashback photos... they kill me. The Mary Kate Olsen cut... I die.
I ALWAYS have had a love/hate/haaate relationship with bangs... they're definitely hit or miss. And I usually get over them after a bit and plead with them to grow haha. But those bangs are super cute! You can always try those clip-in ones (that surprisingly, look awesome) to see how you like it before you go under the knife errrr scissors!!

You have been a cutie since birth!! I say go for it! I've had bangs before...but curly hair and bangs just don't mix. Haha

I've had bangs all my life also! Like since I was born. And I fought it for so long, but since I have a fivehead, I've never been able to get away from them. So in college or so, I started doing the side sweep bang (featured in my header photo on my blog)...and well, it's a good happy medium for me. I think you'd look killer with chunky bangs like TSwift!

Can I tell you how much I loved looking at your pictures!!? And your captions were pretty funny too.

My gut is to say NO to bangs. I've tried so many times, and I've regretted them so many times.

Oh my gosh I loved this!! I LOVE looking back at old photos. It's the best. I had some pretty awful bangs most of my life!! :) I think Taylor's bangs would really suit you though!

i already told you this last night via twitter but this was the best post ever! ha! i was right there with you - got my bangs cut every other week/month by my mom in the middle of my kitchen. we should try and find those childhood pics where our bangs are both cut straight across and oh so thick.

p.s. totally think you should take the leap though and cut yours like taylor's. i know you can rock it!

Hahaha girl I rocked the sprayed back, curled, chunk bangs for years growing up!! I re-visited those bangs about a year ago and rocked them for a few months. I actually really liked them and have considered going back...

I have had bangs my entire life!!! I could never pull off the no bangs look.

Of course I made my daughter have bangs too - until about the time she turned 9 and told me only nerds had bangs and asked if she could grow hers out. There is no sign of bangs on her now! She has long flowing locks and looks beautiful. Wish I would have had the nerve to try it.

bangs were a 90s staple! i had mine straight across right above my eyebrows with a little bowl cut until i was about 6.. then the hair grew, but the bangs were always there. i went through the no bang phase (i blame this partly on Britney Spears).. it wasnt flattering on me. middle part,no layers, no dimension.. just straight down the sides. did i mention that i have a large forehead?

bangs are in girl- do it! just get them long enough where they can be pulled back in a pony. you wont regret it (or maybe you will, and in that case dont blame me)

ps- love your banana republic shirt. i TOTALLY rocked that same one. had it in grey too.

I just died. I remember kneeling on the bathroom floor (GROSS) in middle school re-curling my bangs with my rolly brush and the hand dryer. Gracious. Jeff keeps trying to get me to get Ellasyn's hair cut and get her bangs...umm..no thank you. :)

The bangs are epic.

Oh, great. Now I want to do dedicate a Throw Back Thursday to my hair because I TOTALLY had the same "Mary Kate Olsen" cut (minus the bangs... it didnt work)!! I also had a hair incident where they chopped one side of my hair like 4 inches shorter than the other in JH. Why??? Why?!! Who does that?!! Loved this post!

There is so much right about this post. Loving the old pics. Answer me this- how in the heck did you skip the awkward, ugly stage?

i've always had bangs! i look silly without them. i tried to grow them out twice but i'd still wear my hair in my face, so then i'd cut them again. i've accepted it by now.
