Personal Shopper

I must be looking like a woman with a lot of dough these days because the last two times I’ve walked into a store, I have somehow found myself saddled with a personal shopper…..which, is very NOT me. I’m the kind of shopper that knows just what she wants. I’m not really a fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants shopper….although occasionally I will find myself with a new pair of jeans that I totally didn’t intend to buy. #ithappens

I spend a LOT of time looking at fashion and prefer to put my own outfits together. I think it's extremely hard and near impossible to tell what someones personal style is merely upon them entering your store….especially since I’ve lately found myself shopping in running leggings or swimsuit cover-ups (I swear I don’t wear these to public events).

Which brings me to my visit to White House Black Market a few weekends back. There are very few things in WHBM that I actually like but I was stalking a black shirt I’d seen a girl in Target wearing and figured I’d give it a quick try. But instead of saying “I’m just looking” when asked by “Shannon” the sales girl – I accidentally let it slip that I was looking for a black, ruffly shirt. So after being hauled around the store to see every (and I do mean EVERY) black, ruffle shirt the store had (and in a store where all they sell are black and white clothing – it was a lot) I somehow found myself in the dressing room with three shirts, three dresses that were promised to “look a lot cuter on than they did on the hanger” (they didn’t) and a pair of wedgy beaded flip flops…..
(hi, I’m 85 and retired).

I amused Shannon the Sales Girl by trying everything on – down to the sleeveless floral sheeth complete with maternity tie and listened to her fibs about “oooooh – how awesome” I looked before saying I just wasn’t crazy about anything but thanking her profusely for her “help.” I’ve worked department store retail before and I think it’s because of my experience there that I never believe anyone in a store when they say something “looks great”…..I secretly always think “Man, they’re trying hard for this sale.” And wonder if they’re secretly thinking “Psssh that looks like crap on her!”
I was never a great clothing sales person because…. I am a horrible liar and therefore never made uninvited recommendations. Which I believe is why I was promptly transferred to the fragrance counter ….spritz some mist on a card and throw some coffee beans at someone….now that I could do!

But
What about you?
Do you like picking your own outfits or do you like having a personal shopper?

aaaannnnd I have to wish a VERY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY to one of my blog besties!
Happy Birthday Jana-tana!
(Sniped this from your facebook....sorry I'm such a creepster sometimes)

See ya in 29 days! Whoo HOO

I prefer to pick out my own clothes because a) I can't afford a personal shopper and b) I frequently scout the clearance racks - especially at Target. I am an amazing bargain shopper. I even know which of my local Targets is more likely to have an item (generally the one near my work because the area I work in is more of a "wal-mart" clientele area, no offense to wal-mart shoppers). The way I see it, I work hard for my money, so I'm going to get the most bang for my buck. :)

I went into White House Black Market and I felt they were trying so hard to make a sale. They throw you in there with shoes and then bring other options. I went in there to buy a wedding dress. I fell in love with the one on clearance and then they threw in a really cute dress that I could dress up or down. I fell in love with that one. Then they told me oh well you will get more use out of it (it was a $160.00 compared to 79). So I bought the 160 one because they told me it looked better. An hour later after I tried the dress on for my boyfriends mom..we went back and I returned it and bought the clearance one.

I'm gonna go with half and half! Like Jess, I definitely head for the sales racks first, but I have such a hard time of putting cute outfits together. That's why I stick to dresses. :) Love your shout out annnnd your countdown!

Totally cracking up! I like to shop for my own clothes, and like you, use to work in retail and wasn't very good at telling fibs either!!!

too funny, I'm with you - I do NOT like help shopping, I am the queen of "just looking" even if I am looking for something special... I get so annoyed at my husband because he doesn't know this rule and [when I let him shop with me] tells them whatever we're looking for. FAIL.

ok, but for real!! I HATE the personal shoppers! Places like WHBM and Buckle are the worrrrrrst. And I'm super cheap, so I don't appreciate someone trying to force me to spend more!

haha i lol'd during this entire post

ive totally been in that position with being someones mannequin as they hand me mounds of clothes to try on. I even bought something that didnt even FIT because I felt guilty that the girl tried so hard to find this particular item

i like picking my outfits, and like you, i love to find stuff that i see other people wearing. I have this problem that when I am a bit tipsy in a bar/club, I always go up to girls wearing an outfit I like and say "omg where did you get that!!" and they look at me like i have 5 heads

id love a personal shopper tho if he was a fabulous fashionista gay, maybe like Carson from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy..or Jeff Lewis (if he knows how to be a good shopping buddy haha)

Yup, I totally prefer to do my own thing. When I've had personal shoppers for me, I feel like they pick things that I wouldn't necessarily get because of the price tag (even if it's hot). Then when I try it on and if it looks good, I feel super cheap if I don't buy it.

I promise you I'm not Shannon the sales person, even if I'm rocking maternity ties daily. ;)

I hate when they follow you around! I prefer to look for myself because otherwise they hoard you like no other and start throwing thigns in you didn't even want!

I definitely prefer to pick my own clothes. I'm not the type of person that has one specific style and I like dabs of every style so having someone only choose things from one specific style would annoy the crap out of me. You have a lot of patience because I would have walked out of the store if that happened to me, haha.

it drives me CRAZY when they follow me around. it almost makes me want to leave. or when they just STARE at you. apparently i look like i am going to rob them of everything fabulous.

LOL IRL - "Hi, I'm 85 and retired" Ew those flips are nast. And I have never been in a WHBM store because well, it looks Grandma to me. Very nice of you to oblige the lady. Yah, I worked retail my whole life too but when cutomers were around I'd scurry and try not to make eye contact so that I didn't have to help anyone or answer questions. And when I worked at Gymboree one summer we were supposed to upsale because they had collections and they could be mixed and matched so many ways for the kiddies. Um, I could care less. Buy what you want and I'm not going to try to tell you differently. This is clearly why I'm not in sales.

I seriously can't stand personal shoppers or even if I'm being really honest, shopping with other people even my friends. I get SO MUCH MORE ACCOMPLISHED on my own. I will go to the mall with my gfs for just a casual fun coffee / shop date but not if I really need to pick up stuff.

I think you will enjoy my post today. maybe.

;)

I absolutely HATE when people rush you in the store to try and make a sale!! The Buckle is THE worst store about that!!

Haha if the sales lady has to tell you that it'll look better on than on the hanger, that's gotta be a bad sign! I prefer just shopping myself.
