Culture

Through my many years of job-searching and scouting marketing and PR agency's Websites across the nation, I've noticed a trend....many times the firm's Websites includes a tab about the company's "culture."
Which sometimes refers to diversity in the workplace or nonprofits the company serves but more likely is a reference to the physical aesthetic look and feel of the office.

(We apparently care a lot about our workplace environment since, God knows we spend a ton of time there.)

Today I thought I’d share  some of the things that make up my office culture:

Wireless
Some days I bounce from one conference room to the next, jumping from call to call…. nearly everyone is equipped with laptops to make us more mobile.

Candy
Sitting in our office lobby is a beautiful fish bowl filled with candy…..and I’m not talking reject Halloween candy like Mary Janes or whatever those black and orange wrapped things are that take nine years to chew. I’m talking mini Reeses, skittles, Kit-Kats….it changes every week! #brainfood #RAWR

Windows
Our suite is on the 25th floor and all the walls are glass. I love, love, love that my cube is in a corner and surrounded on two sides by windows. It provides awesome views of the city which, in my opinion, is better than any artwork.

Friday Lunch
Our office provides lunch for us on Fridays. It’s nice to see everyone take a break for a few minutes and interact.

and today our office culture is BOWLING....

I once interviewed at an office whose walls were all doodle-able. The whole place was wipe board walls….very cool.
I interviewed at another place with moveable cubes….so you could “huddle” with your team on whatever project you were working on for that month.

I interviewed at yet another place whose entire office was exposed brick and whose lobby looked like an art museum.

I didn’t accept offers from any of them because they were all lacking one thing…..the candy bowl. #totallie

Whether a big, international company or a small, locally-focused firm, no matter what industry....every office has a culture....Which got me thinking...
What’s your office culture like? Do you sit in a cube or have your own office? Is your office BIG or small. What’s your favorite (or least favorite) things about your office?

I want to work at your office! It sounds awesome!

I share my office with my team of 6 girls, and it's tiny but cozy--we've arranged the whole thing to suit our job and personalities! I love where I work--the people are amazing--I think that's my favorite!

I've got an office that I share with another engineer, but we're in the process of designing then building a new office that will house EVERYONE in the plant in one giant office. Desks will be grouped by department - Production, Engineering, Quality, etc - but it will be much easier to pull everyone together and talk about problems rather than hunting everyone down and trying to schedule a meeting in a conference room.

Our department goes out for lunch every Friday - it varies from week to week - not sure where today's lunch is, but I'm excited because it's always yummy and always fun! Happy Friday!

I think I need your office! :)

Can I work where you work? Hehe. You sold me on the candy. I have an actual office, but I can work from home. I'm mostly in my car driving and going to people's homes. So, my office is really just your regular office.

a loaded question I don't dare answer in print! (and I'm a teacher, so infer what you may)

Your office sounds fabulous and of course the candy bowl is the greatest!

I would share my office space with you but I live in a classroom during the school year! :)

We have "wall talkers" too! But we are not fun enough to make good use out of them and I used to work in a beautiful, brick exposed building...before we moved to this office, and it was...wait for it... haunted! Like the eleavtors would come, go, and stop on their on. It was creepy and awesome all at the same time!

I just started following your blog and am already in love! Great post...I wish our office provided lunch every friday. But I work for a mamma jamma company and that would probably be too much. Oh well..one reason I'm realizinc corporate america is not for me!

Enjoy bowling! :)

Your place of work sounds fabulous.

I'm kind of a big deal at my work, so I have a corner office with two walls of windows, which I love, but overall, our culture isn't fancy. I work for a huge international manufacturing company, so the accounting department is stuck right in with the R&D and techy people. I have to wear eye protection to get to certain areas of my campus. SEXXY!

Fun post! If my office had a bowl of chips and salsa I'd be set. I am just not a candy person.

We have open cubicals, but they aren't really cubes. They are like U shaped desks with glas partitions between us. I don't mind it! I used to have my own office, but I'm used to being out in the open now.

Your work sounds wonderful! the food on fridays thing is nice. Where I work, there's only 5 of us total so it's small and there's only 1 cube that currently no one sits in. We are either out in the open or in a small room. It's fun to hear about where other people work and their space. Have fun this wknd!! :)

I now know you chose your current job because of the candy bowl now... I am impressed haha ; )

my office is kind of separate from everyone else which is good and bad. My door is always open though so I pop out when a conversation starts... everyone else sits in the same space on the 4th (top) floor of our building

okay, where are these places that you are interviewing? and can you get me an interview?.. I kid, but your office sounds nice! I unfortunatly sit in a cube...although its pretty spacious, kinda nice. As for the candy bowl ..we have a guy here that fills his candy bowl almost every day and by the end of everyday .. everything is gone! haha he usually has the good stuff too like kit kats and twix - my fav!

have a good day!!

Your office sounds great! My company is BIG on corporate culture. I sit in an office outside of my bosses office. He is kind of a big deal.

Everyone calls our headquarters a campus. It is made up of 4 old airplane hangers that Howard Hughes used to own which have now been converted. We have a gym, onsite store {I work in fashion}, a Wolfgang Puck Cafe and gardens. It is pretty awesome!

I might be bragging a little bit, but I am pretty proud of where I work;)

When I worked in DC, I worked underground. That's right. Underground. While I hated not knowing what was going on outside, the rest of the building was gorgeous with lots of open space and it was always a joy to come up for some air. I had a spacious work area with a big wooden desk, big book shelf, and super comfy chair!

My least favorite place to work was just a building filled with cubicles. It was stale and corporate and bland. My desk area was tiny and I constantly felt claustrophobic and never had the "quiet" space I like when I work. Blah! Your office sounds great!!

currently my office has big brown leather couches, an empty cup of tea thats been there for 3 days and starting to turn brown. There is a remote next to me for hours of Bravo and E!, and I cant forget the fishtank thats making loud drippy noises because some water needs to be added

doesnt my office sound fab? Its actually my living room because im unemployed remember? hahah

i love the candy idea...esp because its not reject candy (i love the way you put that...its SO TRUE!!)

windows > art! AMEN! art shmart

Your work environment sounds perfect...especially the candy jar:)I have an office and I'm a fan of the big window...though I don't look out too much, it still is a nice distraction:)

Woah that sounds amazing!! I love my office because I have a door to the outside ;) But everyone I work with is significantly older than me...

My least favorite part of my office is that I personally don't have a window. It's a very open space ... but no window.

SO glad you work in a place with great culture! I love my job for the same reason. Our culture is amazing. It's a very casual dress environment, music sometimes, HUGE cubicles, we have a partner care team that helps us with seriously ANYTHING we need. Whether it's for our desk to be set up ergonomically or to schedule an on-site massage for us, it's amazing. ANNNDD we have happy hour fridays :) Who doesn't love having a beer the last hour of their Friday?! I sure do :)

I need to work where you work!!

considering my office is my home that I share with 2 kids three and under, wanna trade? At least with my job, you can drink at all hours of the day.

Wow it sounds like you work in an awesome place! Ahh how I love the dynamics of the States.

I just started my career abroad, I'm currently working in Amsterdam where every Friday afternoon everyone has "beerjes" (beers), wine and crisps together while talking about weekend plans, partners, etc. It's an informal feel and I love this Dutch work culture.
