13.1

I hardly slept Saturday night....after attending the race expo earlier in the day and seeing the hilly-ness of the course and the realization that I'd done, um, zero amount of incline training mixed with the disastrous thought of oversleeping resulted in very little rest. The Expo, by the way, was fabulous. I got totally caught up in knee bands, timing chips and became newly crazy about these:

But I was super excited when the alarm sounded at 4am (as much as one can be excited about waking up at the origin of dawn) I made my way to the race site and my corral in the early hours...the tall skyscrapers still dark except for the occasional office light of a workaholic flickering. They had the Rocky theme blaring over the intercom and all us ancy runners shuffled in the corral, getting one last stretch in, waiting for the air horn to sound.

You could feel the adrenaline in the air and practically hear the heartbeats of the other runners as the corral swelled to hold the numbers. Heartbeats soon exchanged for the steady thud of thousands of soles hitting the pavement....I swear there's not a greater sound. Sometimes I turn my ipod down just to listen to the pounding of shoes on the concrete.

We made our way through downtown Atlanta, neighborhoods and parks as the sun slowly rose....a beautiful run...waking up with the city and finding comraderie in perfect strangers.
I crossed the finish line at 2 hours, 12 minutes and 36 seconds and have never felt so exhausted accomplished. I didnt stop once which was my goal. There's another half marathon in the ATL in October which Im already considering. Thanks so much for all your sweet motivation - I have to say I was overwhelmed by all the Twitter and blog love!

On a complete side note - two people that fascinated me during the run was the barefoot lady (yes, as in NO shoes.....ewwww) and the skirt-runner (seriously, this was no tennis skirt.....this gal was in a calf-length skirt just striding her way to the finish line.) This was of course in addition to some seriously skimpy man-shorts. I saw enough hairy man thigh to last me a lifetime!

Just after crossing the finish line....(please love the random person dressed as a lemon to the left)

Hope you are all motivated this Monday! And if you're not, here's a little Rocky to get you going! Im totally going to box my way into the office this morning (although I doubt it will have the same effect without the monotone, elastic cuff,  gray sweatsuit). XO, A

Congrats Ashley! Coming from someone who used to do 10 mile fitness runs for soccer, the half is a pretty awesome accomplishment.

Wow, congrats!! And may I add you look SUPER cute for running in a matathon. You're so pretty.

And I run intervals for my cardio and Saturday I made the mistake of downing Starbucks before running. I thought I was going to pass out. No coffee before cardio ever again!

lesson learned!

Hahah! Love the quote, "Saw enough hairy mans legs to last a lifetime." SICK. So proud of you for doing this! You're seriously amazing. Running is not my strong point. Neither is walking, really.
