Synchronized Runners.

This past Saturday I ran  the CBC 5K with my sister was my second race and her first.
The morning was cool which I was glad for since it's so much easier to run when sweat is not flowing from every pore in your body. All the racers lined up under the portico at the church...hype filling the air as "2001" blasted from the speakers (i really don't think there could have been a better song choice). Shannon and I found ourselves somewhere between the roadrunner racers and the "slow and steady wins the race" 5kers.

When the air horn blasted we took off. The course wasn't the most exciting...we wound our way up and down the streets of one of the more destitute areas of our town with mobile home after mobile home lining the sides of the streets; many decorated for Halloween (and by "decorated" I mean baby dolls strapped to posts in the front yard.). If nothing else, it motivated us to pick up the pace and get the heck out of there!

After what seemed like an eternity, we passed mile marker one, then two and finally rounded our way back into the parking lot where the race began and the big blowup "Finish Line" arch bobbed in the wind. Now, I don't have the best vision - in fact, I'm pretty sure I'm partially deaf and my eyesight is probably not too far off that of a 70-year olds- but when I saw the red, square lights on the time clock, I could have sworn it said "27:something." I looked over at Shannon and said "I think the clock says 27 minutes." With that, we stepped up the pace and finished the race at 28:21. We were very pleased. Whenever we had run together in the past, we'd always come in at exactly 30 minutes.

While we waited around for the rest of the runners to come in, the race organizer came up and asked if we were listening to the same music because we were running EXACLTY in sync togerher. This is not completely out of character for us. I can't tell you how many people have asked us over the years if we're twins due to our similarities.Though we are in fact not twins and are quite different in many ways, we have found ourselves doing random things simultaneously on more than one occasion. It definitely helped us this time though as we came in 1st and 2nd place in our age division!

After the race we showered and met Kristin for the Port Royal Festival by the Sea. The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing and drugging up on motrin (because apparently I'm old and can't run without pulling my hip flexor!) Ouch!
